FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO READ ... AND
WANT SIMPLE WAYS TO BE HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER.

"Those who are familiar
with James Herriot's vet stories will find
Dr Bernard Preston a must
read."
Last update: April 30, 2008:
Bernard Preston
was born into a Chiropractic family, with all its pros and cons.
Cons? Yes, he was very lucky to live past his ninth month. Just like
today, vaccinations were questioned, and he very nearly died from
Diphtheria.
But all the pros! Not expected to live, at
death's door for several weeks, who knows, was it healthy mother's
milk, regular chiropractic care, or ... the prayers of his nanny?
We'll never know.
His mother Unity, came from a vegetarian
family, intensely interested in nutrition. A plantation of Pecan
nuts, a garden with three Avocado trees and many other indigenous
fruits, and an organic vegetable corner, of course. And, shielded
behind a row of thick bushes, an apiary of wild African honey
bees. Aged 18, dux of her school, young Unity bordered a liner bound
for the United States, and a career in Chiropractic, just a few
weeks before the start of WW 2.
His father Dick, an American by birth, had a
quite different background. Injured while playing golf, and helped
by a chiropractor, he too decided to make Chiropractic his life.
Of course they met. After graduating from
Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dick completed a short course on
extremity adjusting at the Lincoln College where he met and swept
the young South African off her feet!
Bernard Preston survived his diphtheria, a very
serious disease in those pre-sophisticated antibiotic days, and went
on to graduate from high school, a degree majoring in Physics and
Chemistry and, after seven years of teaching, knowing deep down that
he could not escape his destiny despite a rebellious spirit, trained
at the National College.
Preston's daughter, Jane, too is a
chiropractor. Inevitably!
After nearly thirty years in practice, few
people can tell it from the inside like Preston. Certainly not a
'know it all', Preston has a healthy respect for the scientific
method and evidence-based care. Aware that chiropractic had no James
Herriot to tell the chiropractic story, Bernard began to write his
stories. Now, much loved by his fans, scorned by chiropractic's
critics, his books have found a nitch in the chiropractic world.
Says he: "Few things disturbed me more than, walking into two of the
biggest book shops in the world, I couldn't find one book on
Chiropractic."
Light, fun, easy reading, here you will find
the inside story of Chiropractic.

I do enjoy your writing style, Dr Preston. The
lighter side of life…….I enjoy reading books that are not too heavy,
so I don't have to
think too hard. Thinking is reserved for when I work! When I
read I want it to flow easily and be no effort for my tired brain to
understand. Your writing does just this.

Congratulations to Italy on becoming the
latest country in which chiropractic is recognised, with the right and
duty to diagnose on the standard primary contact basis, and with the
right to use the title 'doctor of chiropractic'. DC.
(There are now 90 countries world wide where chiropractic is
recognised and regulated)

I am looking forward to your third book, Dr
Preston. I really enjoyed reading Frog and Bats! They make you
think, laugh and relax just like a good book should!

FAN MAIL: Said a few of Bernard Preston's fans about his published works:
"Hmm, this looks like a good read!" - Ruth Ackerman
(his granddaughter, the next chiropractor?)
I enjoyed Frog in my Throat
very much as did my wife and some of the patients and staff members.

Bernard Preston writes with an
engaging touch that spurs you onwards to the next chapter. I felt that I
could read it again and find something that I had missed or even extract
a deeper understanding from the second time around. It would be a good
companion on a long distance flight.
Dr Stuart Wight, Scotland.

Bats in my
Belfry is the fascinating autobiographical tale of Bernard
Preston’s life and work as a chiropractic doctor in South Africa,
his varied relationships with his patients, friends and family, and the
pros and cons of his profession. It is at once scientifically
informative, funny, sad, poignant and very, very human. Overall, this really is an
absorbing tale that is a good read in terms of both content and style.
Editor: The Pen Press.

Bernard Preston’s
two novels come as a delightful surprise. He has a refreshingly natural
flair for story-telling. His style is relaxed and easy to read, giving
us a delicious peep into the daily life of a chiropractor– I’m looking
forward to his third book.

I’m bleary eyed this am! Your
book, Bats in my Belfry, has kept me up half the night! My wife
is complaining about you, she can’t ever remember me doing that before.
It’s a pot boiler!
